Spray with stretch therapy is frequently used in the treatment of myofascial pain syndrome. Tactile stimulation caused by sudden cold and the vapocoolant stream over the skin causes a continuous blockage of alarming impulses to the spinal cord which has an inhibitory effect on locally generated pain from trigger points. Also stretch and spray technique seems to have neurophysiological effect that involves sudden decrease in skin temperature affecting intrafusal muscle fibers that control muscle tension. Several studies showed the effect of spray and stretch therapy for increasing range of motion of hip joint and reducing myofascial pain syndrome. Clinical conditions that may respond to spray and stretch include myofascial pain and low back pain due to tight muscles, acute stiff neck, tight hamstrings, and sprained ankle. Relief of pain facilitates early mobilization and restoration of muscle function.
